Why Las Vegas pools need fresh water
Pool water does not stay the same over time. Every time water evaporates, the minerals in it stay behind. Every top-off with our hard Las Vegas tap water adds more. Chemicals added week after week leave their own residue, too. After a few years, calcium, dissolved solids and stabilizer build up to the point where the water is harder to balance, chlorine does not work as well, and scale forms faster on the tile and surface.
No amount of chemistry fixes that. The answer is fresh water, which is why Michael's advice is simple: change your pool water every 3 years or less. When it is time, we can drain your pool for you.
When to drain your pool
- Water change time. It has been about 3 years, or the water has become hard to keep balanced.
- Before an acid or chlorine wash. The pool has to be empty for an acid wash.
- Deeper work. Heavy stains, heavy scale or work that cannot be done with water in the pool.
- A pool too far gone. Some neglected pools are better drained and cleaned than treated.

How a pool drain works
- Plan the timingDraining during the hottest stretch of summer can stress a pool's surface, so many owners plan a drain for spring or fall.
- Drain the right wayPool water in the valley should go to the sewer cleanout, not the street or the storm drain.
- Clean while it's emptyAn empty pool is the best time for an acid wash or tile cleaning.
- Refill and balanceFresh water goes in and gets balanced, so your pool starts clean and clear.
A pool should not sit empty longer than it needs to, so we plan the drain, any cleaning and the refill together.
